Welcome to the land of rainforests, waterfalls, and rivers : Portland, Oregon. This city offers the best of the Pacific Northwest, including fresh air, boundless nature, and a funky walkable downtown. We spent a weekend in the city and discovered the must-see spots.
Top Points of Interest: 1. Cannon Beach- This beach made famous by the movie "The Goonies" has some of the most pristine coastline in the West. In fact, I experienced my first bald eagle sighting above the nearby cliffs at Ecola State Park. The beach also features Haystack Rock, a large rock that can be reached by foot during low tides (image below). The rock appears almost mythical as it seems to float in the ocean with the low tides creating a reflection of the sky. The beach is only one hour from Portland and definitely worth the drive.
2. Multnomah Falls- The 2nd tallest year-round waterfall in the US, featuring a bridge where you can get up close and personal with the waterfall. (image below)
3. Columbia River- The largest river in the Pacific Northwest with many scenic viewpoints from the cliffs. 4. Portland International Rose Test Garden - Atop the hills above the city is a rose garden with over 7,000 roses of all varieties and colors. The view from the gardens stretches all the way to Mount Hood on a clear day. It is worth a visit, especially during Spring/Summer when the roses are in full bloom.
