This February, I visited Palm Springs for the annual Modernism Week. The architectural celebration brought over 40,000 visitors to the city.
The first stop on our agenda was the open air bus tour, which was a 3 hour ride through the Palm Springs strip and neighborhoods which featured work from Albert Frey, Donald Wexler, John Lautner, and Richard Neutra. It stopped at the estates of stars that helped put Palm Springs on the map, such as the Frank Sinatra House and Elvis Presley Honeymoon estate. At night, the modernist buildings were illuminated with the "Modernism Week" logo and architect's name on the facade. My favorite modernist buildings were the Palm Springs City Hall and the Palm Springs Visitor Center Building, both designed by Albert Frey. The Aerial Tramway was also modernist, built in 1963. The tram itself takes visitors to the bottom of the desert floor to the snow-caped San Jacinto Mountains (elevation 10,834 ft). The view is spectacular.
