San Diego has been one of my favorite places to photograph. On this photo trip, I wanted to photograph the natural landscapes of San Diego. I went to two semi-hidden locations: the Botanical Gardens and Torrey Pines.
San Diego Botanical Garden
This Botanical Garden is situated near a residential community in Encinitas (North County). I always heard that San Diego had a Botanical Garden but I did not know exactly what to expect. I originally planned one hour to view the gardens, but that quickly turned into about 3 hours. There is so much to see I could have easily spent the entire day there. The grounds include an extensive cactus garden, bamboo garden (below), tropical rainforest garden, indigenous California plants garden, and my favorite: the cork tree forest. I met one fellow photographer who was shooting with a macro lens extender, which is a DSLR attachment to shoot microscopic close ups of the plants. It allowed for an entirely different perspective on the plants.
Torrey Pines State Reserve
With a solid 5 star rating our of 500 reviews on Yelp, I knew this park had to be good. I have passed through Torrey Pines many times, but never knew there was so much to see on this bluff along PCH. This time, I stopped to explore the hiking trails. This park is special because it is one of the few places besides Santa Rosa Island where the Torrey Pine grows due to the unique climate and minerals in the soil. It is so unexpected to see pine trees along the ocean in an arid desert California climate. The park has a Nature Museum and tons of hiking trails along the bluffs to the ocean. The bluffs had eroded cliffs and rock formations. From the top of the bluff, you could see the entire San Diego bay. It is one of the best views of the city. Check out these two photographic locations on your next trip to San Diego. Comments are closed.
